Frequently Asked Questions MEC

The online application is open from April 1st up to and including April 30th of each year.

For the application at our department it is not necessary to provide apostilled documents.

A Bachelor’s Degree in Economics is not an absolute requirement, but at the same time you must be able to demonstrate knowledge of economics that corresponds to that of the Bachelor’s in Economics in our department. In all cases, very good knowledge of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Empirical Economics, and Public Economics is required. Whether your qualification can be recognised as equivalent to our Bachelor’s in Economics in terms of content and methods also depends on the courses you have attended and the areas of specialization. This can only be checked after the application deadline. A statement of suitability cannot be given before this date.

Applying before the completion of your bachelor’s program is possible as soon as you have completed at least 75% of your bachelor’s program. (In a 180 ECTS program this would mean you have obtained at least 135 ECTS). In this case, make sure your online application is accompanied by an official transcript of the grades achieved to date, along with a weighted average grade. In case of admission you will receive an acceptance offer conditional on your final grade. The admission is finally completed as soon as you have submitted your Bachelor’s qualification certificate.

The calculation of equivalent grades will be carried out on the basis of the modified Bavarian Formula (PDF). Please note that grades are rounded to the second place after the decimal point.

The test of admission for entry in winter semester always takes place a couple of weeks after the application deadline. The exact date will be announced on our website at the start of the application period. If you have to take part in this test, you will receive an invitation by email about two weeks before the test date.

Please note: The test only takes place in Munich, there are no exceptions possible!

We are unfortunately unable to offer scholarships due to regulatory and budgetary reasons. For scholarships we recommend you address e.g. DAAD. Please note that we can't issue recommendations for scholarships for candidates unknown to us. In addition, we can't issue any sort of confirmation that you are eligible for the program in advance of the regular application procedure, also not for an application for a scholarship.

For financial support other than scholarships, master’s students have the opportunity to work as student research or teaching assistants. If you are interested in a position, you may address our Graduate Office after the results of your first exam are available (December in your first year of studies).

Yes! All international applicants must apply separately to both. They must apply via the online tool for the Department of Economics, and again at the International Office via their additional application procedure.

A positive certificate of suitability is valid so long as the program is not subject to fundamental revisions. As revisions due to changes in legal regulations may arise in the year after admission, we recommend you apply for the year in which you want to begin your studies.

In case you did receive a positive certificate in the past and want to start later, please contact the Graduate Office as soon as possible!

The number of students we can admit to the master's program is not limited. Therefore, every suitable applicant will be placed in the program

We do not provide you with the University's TOEFL or IELTS code, and instead require that you upload a scanned document (maximum size: 5 MB) with the results to your online application. If a delayed delivery of the test result was requested, it has to be sent via email to master@econ.lmu.de.

Students who want to study Economics as a minor subject don't have to apply. For the minor subject Economics there is no entry restriction and therefore, you do not need a admission letter from our department. Whether you can choose Economics as a minor is determined by the regulations of your main subject (major); if you have questions regarding this, please contact the study advisors in your major subject.

We try our best to process your application as quickly as possible. For applicants who must take part in the test of admission, we estimate approximately two weeks from after the test until you receive a decision. Please note that we can give no information on the status of your application until the entire process is completed.

If you are not able to provide your TOEFL/IELTS score at the time of application you may upload a formal petition instead, which says that you are going to hand in your result after the application deadline via email.

(Deadline: 31st August!!)
